In this group lesson, Amy discusses the benefit of using forward swizzles as a quick warm up tool. This helps her observe their strengths while seeing (and hearing!) if they are balancing correctly when they push on the back part of their skates.
In Amy’s experience, hockey players haven’t been taught to listen to their blade on the ice, so a goal should be to “get them to hear that crunch.” This aids them in feeling power.
Moving on, Amy discusses what she calls “meatball position.” This is essentially an over-trained hockey position to develop strength and balance. But it’s not as easy as one would think.
This drill is a great demonstration of the athlete’s flexibility and strength level, which will allow the coach to plan future training sessions.
For a fun game (especially with younger athletes), they can perform “meatball swizzles.” Amy emphasizes loading to generate power by pressing into the ice, which can definitely help players throughout their hockey career.
