Summer demonstrates some drills for those who want to “excel in their edgework” and enhance their edge control. These drills are just a forward three turns in the figure skating world, but hockey players rarely practice these turns.
The first drill is a forward inside three turn. Beginning on an inside edge and turning to the outside edge, the challenge is to stay on one foot the whole time. Most hockey players will struggle to hold the exit edge. Summer begins and ends on the blue line, which will be a challenge for those athletes who find their edges a little weak.
Summer then shows forward outside three turns, starting from the forward outside edge and turning to backward inside edge. Although she doesn’t give much description, we can see that this drill could be done with or without a stick, and the skater might need to be reminded to keep their shoulders checked toward the inside of the circle.
Notice how Summer skates this with much less focus on alignment or posture compared to how a figure skating coach typically teaches it. This includes the body forward position (although keeping the head and upper chest up is important) and “wide stance” with the feet.
