Forward Crossover drill (Kathleen Gazich)

In this private lesson, Kathleen starts with a “below tempo” forward crossovers on the circle. She reminds the skater to open up the shoulder and keep the stick toward the middle of the circle. As the tempo increases, the athlete has a tendency to simply lift up the foot instead of push out sideways.

An important detail Kathleen points out is the student’s toe that opens on the crossovers. She reminds him to point the toes forward so the hips takes less time turning.

Moving onto a drill focusing on taking the corner, the skater pushes wide into forward lateral crossovers. Slowing down the tempo can help the skater align the shoulders properly to help the outsides edge balance to generate power.

Changing direction into a backhand posture, Kathleen reminds the skater where he should position his stick and shoulders. Turning them more will help him take the corner better. Ideally, he could use this maneuver to get the puck in the defensive zone and take it to the other end.
