In this video Katrina discusses powerpulls which all Peewees and Bantam levels should feel comfortable with. She starts with two skiers and a powerpull on one foot. Note to figure skating coaches – skiers are also known as two foot slaloms.
Using the line for this drill, being sure to keep the head up (keeping their jersey logo visible) with quiet arms. If the arms are a problem, holding a stick in front or keeping the arms out will help with posture. Katrina mentions that some parents might question what you have the students do with their arms for this drill, but you can assure them that upper body control leads to stick handling and puck control.
Common errors are lack of balance on the edges which can be drilled by holding extended edges on the line. This can be done for both edges – focus on upper body control.
The push for the edges starts with the T-positon and bent knees. Control and stillness are key. Katrina doesn’t usually mention shoulder angles with group settings, but might discuss rotation in private lessons. She reminds coaches to check the skater’s boots to see if they are properly tied which might help younger skaters with ankle control.
