Class warm up pt 1 (Jackie Brenner)

This video introduces Coach Jackie Brenner from Oklahoma City. She’s warming up her edge and power skating class with drills around the rink.

The first warm up drill is pushing and pulling backward swizzles. The skaters are reminded to keep their legs slow while opening their chests. The inner thighs, glutes and hamstrings will be warmed up while activating their core.

“Shoulder over hips” and open chest are consistent reminders as the athletes push and pull forward around the rink. These drills focus on alignment, athletic stance, blade usage, and body awareness.

The third drill the athletes preform are alternating pumps down the ice. The students need to keep eyes level and drive opposite arms in front. The variation of this drill is to stagger the feet while pushing “like a motor” before gathering the feet. This is done in a curving pattern. The pushing foot needs to come behind while keeping the stick on the ice. Jackie compared the movement to “treading water.”
