Two Kinds of Crossovers (Joe Sundgren)

This video is an excerpt from a longer interview with Joe Sundgren. He’s discussing various details about crossovers. In the beginning of the video, he’s mentioning the effect shoulders have on the trajectory of crossovers.

He briefly touches on the importance of the push on outside edge before moving on to describing a slight ‘hop’ on a crossover. Players ‘come up out of their skates’ when making crossovers for the purpose of speed, essentially staying more up with their body. This type of crossover is used for moving quickly down the ice.

Longer strokes without a hop and the torso and knees staying lower create sharper turns. These crossovers are used for sharper turns, for example when coming out of the zone and need to turn back into the zone.
