In this group class of older skaters, Diane Ness of Pro Edge hockey leads the group in power turn drills. She requests that they lean the inside glove to the ice without piking at the waist. As she observes the skaters, she reminds them to stay low and keep their feet apart.
While skating this is a figure eight pattern, she tells them to keep their butts down and ‘don’t get stuck on that heel.’ She observes them ‘running’ and reminds them they should be in middle of the blade to avoid ‘rudder’ skater. They want to ‘ride out the gliding’.
A final comment about the power turns is to keep their weight over their front knee, not the stretched out foot.
Moving on to crossovers, Diane breaks down the four essentials: 1) Push out to side (not back) 2) cross all the way over 3) lean over outside edge 4) control your upper body into the circle. The same rules apply – stay low and don’t go up and down.
Diane peps the athletes up by challenging them to skate out of their comfort zone and reminding them it’s ok to screw up in practice in order to push yourself.
