This video is a progression from Katrina’s inside mohawks. Now, she tackles the outside mohawks which are generally harder for athletes to perform.
From a solid forward glide with the shoulder facing outside the circle, the skater needs to rotate outside the circle and hold the outside edge. Students will most likely find themselves tipping forward.
Athletes needs to remember that the shoulders and hips are turning against each other. This takes control. If a skater can’t glide backwards on the outside edge, they can simply glide on it without doing the mohawk to get familiar with the position.
Katrina says this makes a nice six minute drill for when group classes are working at stations. Hockey players are used to quick movement and fast paced drills, so she aims to keep this fun and engaging to keep their attention.
