Katrina’s video focuses on a five step mohawk pivoting sequence on the circle.
Starting from an inside mohawk (which they should already know), skaters then step backwards into an outside mohawk. The head needs to stay over the line, with still shoulders.
Katrina makes note that she does not want to see any stomping movements, but emphasizes stillness and control especially in the upper body. This sequence is done in both directions.
Katrina adds counts to the steps to add rhythm and keeps the edges all the same length. Each count is an edge with a check and should be in control and calm. Everything is done underspeed at this point, but could be done overspeed once they get the hang of it.
Common problems could be students who want to rush and flail. There should be a glide throughout the drills and gathering of the feet in between beats. Also, Katrina mentions arms and shoulders checking rotation in order to step on clean edges.
Often times kids just want to skate super fast so having them count can be a big help to slow down for the drill.
