In a private lesson with a young student, Renae has her student use an exercise band around his ankles while he skates ‘baby’ swizzles. She has him start out small so he doesn’t fall backward and gets the feel of using the bands.
She wants him to ‘keep it flowing’ as he transitions to a half swizzle pump. The skater tends to bend over so she reminds him to keep his chest up while he tries to maintain a consistent momentum.
Even though the skater is challenged by this drill, Renae assures him that he is still getting the benefits of doing it. He then pumps out one foot at a time which causes him to look down again.
Moving on to shifting for a count of ten then ten slaloms, Renae takes the band off to see how his skating has changed after doing the drill. Every push he took got faster after doing the drill with the band.
