Kelly continues his two foot warm-up progression with a swizzle push with a pump under. He demonstrates the desired motions from north to south down the ice. The shoulders should twist against the hips while maintaining a strong pump underneath.
Kelly suggests it might be easier to start this exercise on the circle in order to isolate the motions and focus on performing them correctly. Feeling and maintaining a two foot glide while having the legs crossed is a relationship skaters need to know, especially while being stable. Adding a lean will garner additional power.
Kelly discusses how he integrates the arms in order for the skaters to fully feel the shoulders and rib cage engage. He goes on to talk about how in hockey we always mention bending knees, shoulders up, chest up etc, but the back muscles aren’t discussed much. The back is just as important for proper posture and propulsion.
