During a private lesson Avery works with a younger skater on tight turns. She reminds the athlete of the proper tight turn position: weight is distributed on both legs, with chest up and eyes level. She has him try these around circles on the ice.
Avery tells her student to check their shoulders. The athlete glances over his shoulder to check game play behind them before turning back on themselves. Even during a skating lesson Avery knows the importance of integrating game technique into her lesson.
One the next run though, Avery has him reach down and touch the dot with his glove. This helps him feel the proper balance.
Moving on to one crossover in, push, one crossover out. This drill works on full extension and big pushes. She has her students go slow and then add speed. Next time he goes down the ice, she adds two crossovers each time. Every single push needs to gain power.
The video ends with her reminding him to not get thrown off by other skaters in the rink, it’s ok to zigzag around people.
