This is a great drill that really gets the skater moving around the rink and integrating pucks and shooting while still focusing on skating technique.
Joe starts his elite athlete out with skating ‘hops’ twice around a circle. The first foot stays right on the line, and the foot that hops glides right on the line as well. The full push ‘needs to be out and away from the circle.’ He wants his student to avoid flicking her foot behind.
Upon reaching the bottom of the circle, the student should gain speed, catch the waiting puck, pass it back to Joe then make a shot at the goal.
She doesn’t need a jumpy hop, but Joe has her try to an actual hop and holding the edge afterward with the leg under extended. This will help her establish the motion and translate that easily into her strides.
Joe clarifies that the hop is off the left foot while he pushes off, while his right comes across. The left foot needs to make a full push.
