Backward Outside Edge Drill (Averie Brenner)

Averie is working with a young 8U skater, and has him perform a drill of back outside edge, step forward, crossover, turn to backward and repeat.

Once the young boy gets the sequence, we can see that he doesn’t really ride the backward outside edge. This is often the least comfortable edge for skaters to learn. To get him to feel that edge more, she challenges him to hold it for a count of two. While he eventually does this, he is still on two feet.

Averie explains that she often makes up drills that may come up in gameplay. If a player is stuck at the boards with a player on your inside, you might need to step outside with a back outside edge. Athletes need to be well rounded.

Averie just made this drill up on the spot. Outside edges are often neglected but could come in handy during certain game situations.
