Backward Edge on the Line (Katrina Stewart)

Katrina’s topic focuses on her backwards edge drill on the line. Beginning with a good push into a c-cut, the skater must hold a backwards outside edge while rotating shoulders and gliding back to the line. The key is to see the line as the skater turns their head to look back as they glide back to center.

To aid with stillness, skaters can hold a stick and engage their core to ensure nice solid edges. Katrina doesn’t want to see ‘extra wiggles.’

If skaters are truly having problems, skating on two feet can be a stepping stone to mastering this drill later on. This will help the athlete concentrate on how their shoulders are rotating through the half circle.

The weight should be on the middle-front of the skate. Some skaters might tip forward, but bending their knee should help with this. They will come up slightly out of the knee to rotate. Also, make sure they avoid leaning forward, especially if they are holding a stick.

Skaters can help with balance by keeping their head up and on top of their body. Keep the shoulder and hip over the ankle as the skater rotates.
