Edges Warm Up with Power Turns

In Andy’s first video, he covers a typical skating warm-up he uses for younger skaters, and uses a nine year old demonstrator.

Starting with an outside edge drill, Andy reminds the skater to bend her knees, drop her hips and lean on her outside edge. With three pushes then a circle on a strong one-footed outside edge, the skater needs to stay low without standing up during the one foot glide. He also reminds her to keep a strong ankle so her boot doesn’t scratch the ice.

Moving on to power turns, the student is reminded to stay on two feet, rotate shoulders, bend knee and use her head to look where she’s going. Andy makes a very important note for the video viewers, in that his skater is left handed so her stick placement will look different than his when he demonstrates. Players have the choice to hold their stick with one hand or two depending on the direction of their power turns, and he asks her to do both on her second run through of this exercise.

The last drill showcases flexibility of the groin by turning on both inside edges in a circle. Andy mentions that not only is it a figure skating move but it is very important in hockey as well.
