Figure 8s on the Line (Katrina Stewart)

Today we have another video from Katrina.  This is a progression from her earlier video on edge drills on the line.

Katrina draws from her figure skating background for this Figure Eights inside/outside drill.  The eight can be drawn on the ice bigger or smaller depending on the height of the student.

Head, shoulders, body lean and foot placement are essential for the success of this drill. They need to be done with intention and control in order to hold the edge.

This drill is not the most glamorous or exciting and it requires stillness, strong core and fine muscle control. You can remind the athletes that this will ultimately aid with puck control and directional movement. Most young athletes will find this difficult but with repetition they will get better.

The second half of the video Katrina takes the drill to the blue line and discusses knee bends and shoulder positions.  One thing to make sure the student is NOT doing is leaving their free leg floating out behind them. Collecting their feet together underneath them will prevent loss of balance.

Katrina wraps it up by discussing performing the drill with an inside edge, varying the speed, and how to make it fun for students.
