Coach Kathleen Gazich works with a student in a private lesson on holding various edges in controlled and balanced circles. We join in as the skater is practicing forward outside, with Kathleen reminding the skater to sit low, perform big pushes on the crossovers, and lean into the edge.
Continuing to the forward inside edges, Kathleen emphasizes the skater needs to balance on the middle/back of the blade. She also notes that he needs to avoid making “too tight of a circle with the ankle dropping”. This can be done by “staying on top of the boot”. She challenges the skater to remain low, take big pushes and try to keep the glide going a little longer.
Backwards outside edges gives Kathleen the chance to emphasize the importance of shoulder placement towards the inside of the circle. Reminding the skater to pull the shoulder and the free foot back before going into the crossovers helps him hold the desired position in what can be seen as his less dominant skating direction. Kathleen gives a friendly reminder that his weight should be middle/front on the blade.
Finishing with back inside edge, Kathleen discusses shoulder placement being square and the importance of not letting the ankle drop in. “The lean comes from the body not the ankle”
