In this video Kalli describes a few games she uses with her skaters to reinforce, in fun ways, all the skills they need to work on.
For beginner skaters, Kalli uses a pool noodle for a version of the old “sharks and minnows” game. The students begin at one end of the rink with coaches waiting in the middle to tag them with a noodle as they try to skate quickly to the other end. If they get tagged, they take a knee and become a tagger for the next wave that tries to cross the ice. This can be a great warm up game or a fun way to end practice.
Ringette is the next game Kalli describes, where the athletes flip their stick around and attempt to get the ringette into the goal. Free for all, or with teams, ringette can be a fun warm-up for athletes.
To work on stopping, the classic game of freeze tag across the ice will help players feel their bodies in unusual positions and practice stopping quickly.
One of Kalli’s favorite games is ‘asteroids’. The athletes skate from one end to the other while trying to dodge tennis balls rolling across the ice. Within the ensuing chaos, the players are working on jumping, pivoting and quick skating.
