Introducing Skating to Beginners (Kalli Funk)

What’s the best way to teach a stride to someone who’s never skated before? Kalli‘s video is perfect for Learn to Skate classes or parents who are volunteering to coach the youngest skaters.

To get comfortable on the ice right away, Kalli has the skaters start in a walking motion, and have them march to get used to picking up their feet on the ice. Most little ones tend to shuffle which makes the feet go too wide.

Marching in place lets them focus on good knee bend and balance. If a skater needs assistance, an instructor can help them by holding just one hand, not two, to avoid the skater depending too much on aid.

Step two is to have the skater push on one foot at a time. Once they feel comfortable with one foot, then they can begin to alternate feet. The main goal is to master the basic motion of the strides even if they aren’t powerful or long at this point.
