In Amy Brolsma’s first video, she gives a little background about her journey of becoming a hockey power skating coach. Skaters approached her for help in “getting them faster.”
Amy focuses her hockey skating coaching on balance, efficiency and strength. Through her drills, her players have seen “increased speed, success in the game and their confidence has grown.” All these concepts she takes right from figure skating.
Amy wears hockey skates and discusses the adjustment she had to undergo to get used to not having a toe-pick. Hockey skates help Amy get the skater’s attention and avoid catching a toe-pick in some hockey moves.
Hockey concepts are similar to figure skating – moving forwards, backwards, gathering power from edges, and being in control of themselves. Many figure skating drills can be directly applied to hockey power skating.
