Kathleen gives a private lesson that focuses on a “J” start with crossovers into a stride. First without a puck then with one, the skater starts with one slow crossover to rotate and “get a really good push.” Then the goal is to increase the tempo.
Kathleen demonstrates the angles of the quick start that she wants to see.
Common problems are that the feet keep moving but the crossover stops pushing. Kathleen points out the obvious difference from the initial drill the athlete skated versus the later one where we lost speed with less ice coverage. Kathleen still is happy with the drill because this skater is a “smooth skater” since he’s put a lot of time into focusing on skating skills.
