Keeping the Torso Square

Coach Renae helps a player keep his torso square and open his hip flexors to improve strides. While using a resistance band, she pulls back on the skater while he tries to march with toes pointed out and heals digging in. To keep his head and shoulders up, the skater holds his stick over his head.

Next, they repeat the drill while the skater tries to balance the puck at the end of his extended stick. The goal is to encourage stillness. Keeping the puck on the end of the stick, Renae then has the skater perform ten swizzles without dropping the puck. After that he tried the same thing but while holding inside edges.

These drills teach the “upper body to stay still and the lower body works.”
