Elizabeth is working off-ice with a hockey referee. Focusing on generating lateral power, Elizabeth demonstrates a sideways jump with a ‘stick and stabilize’ landing. This progresses to adding a hop. The key is too keep low.
Training lateral movement aids in hockey player’s escape, evade and attack abilities.
An extra layer of difficulty is to add progressive hops as the athlete moves across the room. As Elizabeth states, this exercise is good for “coordination and repeated effort”, but it also is a mental drill as well. The athlete needs to let the trailing foot determine the number of hops to take with the leading foot.
Combine the counting with remembering not to jump negative distance and sticking the landing, the athlete gets quite the workout! It’s physical and cognitive fitness.
