Joe Sundgren is a hockey player and coach, and in his first video he’s working with an older player on improving his speed. Using pucks lined up on the lines, the play skates back and forth, focusing on stopping and starting as quickly as he can.
Joe reminds the skater to stay lower and work on leveling his shoulders. Using his stick across his shoulders to demonstrate, Joe leans over to show how the stick and shoulders dip thus changing the intended momentum during the drill.
After beating his initial time on the drill, the player is then instructed to move his arms (and stick) in a more controlled way. When “the stick comes through quick” the shoulders do too, which allows the blade to be flat on the crossover with a push in the new direction. Using the full blade to push through allows to skater to cut his time even more.
