Amy‘s video begins with a drill she takes directly from the figure skating world: alternating outside three turns. The skaters want to work on changing directions, stepping right on their outside edge then pivoting backwards with level hips. Then pushing forward to get power into a new circle.
This teaches them balance, keeping level, and changing direction. The players need to always step on their outside edge for this drill, and Amy asks them to hold this outside edge longer.
Flexibility is a key element to being a good hockey player, and if athletes are not flexible or open with their hips this drill will come as a challenge.
Next Amy has them practice inside edge three turns, with a crossover. After getting the feel for it, Amy has them extend the crossover. She reminds us that when players are exposed to a new drill, they might need to follow you down the ice a couple times as you demonstrate until the get the rhythm of it.
