Power Turn Drill Around a Tire

How can skaters get lower on power turns? Flex the ankles, bend the knees and sit the bottom down. In this Pro Edge group taught by class to younger skaters, the players try to touch their hand to the ice while performing power turns. Keeping the eyes up and bending at the knees and not the waist is a common reminder for the kids.

The coach uses a fun demonstration and has a player lean on him to show the others the proper angle they should be in on the power turns.

Performing the drill without and then with sticks shows the kids the correct positions for various parts of their bodies. “Look to where you want to go” is the coach’s words of wisdom.

Lastly, the kids try making a 360 power turn around a tire on the ice. Diane Ness comes in with a video of their drill to remind them to keep their feet apart. This is a fantastic tool to help skaters see what they’re doing.
