Slide Stop Turn (Pro Edge)

In this group class of older players, Diane Ness teaches the Slide Stop Turn; a move useful when you don’t have time or space.

Step one is knowing how to stop on an outside edge one foot. It’s key to avoid shuttering during the stop and avoiding getting caught on the inside edge.

The second component after the one foot outside edge stop is to work on a slight turn with two feet. The third step is to turn around in a tight position. The instructors demonstrate the difference between a power turn and a slide stop turn. The athletes should hear the difference.

As the class breaks into groups, we hear Diane giving feedback about how the stance is not quite the same as a power turn, the front foot needs to be turned out at an angle. Regarding the foot that is stopping, Diane says to “pick it up, angle it, and stop on it first.”

Diane gives individual feedback to an athlete who is having trouble, and she boils it down to the fact that his one foot stop needs improvement. Sometimes he’s too far back on his blade, and he needs to feel the slide of the whole edge against the ice.

She suggests taking the move in sections. “You can’t do the turn until you can do the stop.”
