This video is a continuation of Kelly’s warm up, where he ended with skaters doing swizzles with hands on their knees. Here, he progresses along those lines, but has the skaters push through side to side with a ‘swoop’ motion.
This lunge gets into the hip flexor and engages the glutes. The lean and side to side action is especially important. The foot that is pushing out needs to isolate and feel the push along with the pull back in. Kelly mentions that he wants a clean glide across in between the pushes.
Extension and squeeze is emphasized to ‘learn to generate power from nothing.’ The skater should feel this in their quads and the knee action should be low – Kelly states that skaters really can’t get low enough.
Common errors include inability to steer the body through the proper directions, so Kelly has the skaters start slow with their hands on their knees.
