Katrina Stewart is giving a young skater a lesson focusing on turning from forward to backwards in both directions. Starting on the blue line, he should skate forward, then turn directions and hustle backwards.
The goal is to avoid the hockey stop slide before the turn, and to stay centered in the middle of the skate to avoid losing momentum during the move.
Athletes tend to naturally have a favored turn direction, so Katrina gives specific directions about head movement and where to look in his harder direction. Even with looking in the direction of where he wants to turn, his body naturally wants to turn his ‘easier’ direction.
