Warm Up Drills (Avery Brenner)

Today we are excited to introduce a new presenter on our site. Avery Brenner is a power skating coach based in Oklahoma City. In her first video she’s warming up an 8U skater.

To warm up abductors and knees, and get the legs moving, she has the skater skate forward then backward swizzles down the ice.

Following that, he skates straight line C-cuts end to end. Avery reminds him to keep his chest up, and to ‘gain energy both ways’ by pushing out and in, not just out.

Building on that, the next drill is curved C-cuts with two pushes. The goal is to maintain speed throughout and keep the eyes up.

To drill inside edges, Avery has the athlete set his edge, bend over and tap the ice with his hand. This works on establishing balance and agility.

Double pulsing on one foot proves to be a bit more difficult for the skater but is a fantastic way to engage the foot and legs muscles.
