In this video, Kalli discusses backwards stopping. Once a skater knows how to stop when skating forward, they need to know how to stop backwards.
Basically doing a snowplow stop backwards, Kalli pushes her toes out and she skids across the ice to a stop. Two piles of snow should form on the outside of the blades. Knees need to stay bent for balance and to immediately skate in another direction.
This method of stopping might prove to be a little harder for players because their body will have to be leaning little more forward than their feet. If the body is too far back, they won’t be able to stop.
One foot backward stops are similar to quick change in direction stops moving forward. The front foot comes up during the stop and it’s ready to push into a stride. Again, the body needs to be leaning a bit forward during the stop.
If skaters feel a shimmie or skidding on the stopping foot, it usually means their weight isn’t evenly distributed on the foot and the knee needs to be bent to push the weight onto the leg.
