Averie is working with a young student in what she calls the ‘Bowtie Drill’. It’s named this because of the shape of the curling circles on their sheet of ice. The athlete does a ‘toes for time’ turn where he’s on his toes and they both turn at the same time, into a crossover with a step forward.
Then while gliding, the student drops one knee, then the other, then both. This part is not only fun for younger skaters, but it teaches them to get up quickly and move fast should they fall during a game.
Next the student performs the bowtie drill with the glide in between going backwards. This is also a practical exercise because young skaters so often fall while skating backward. Teaching them to get up quickly and be prepared to move is important.
