Forward Outside Edge Drill (Kelly Corcoran Smith)

This is a continuation of Kelly’s edge class after the warm-ups. After warming up the quads and core, Kelly has his students start performing one foot, isolating drills.

Similar to the swoop, now Kelly has his students do this with one foot on an outside edge. He’s looking for the free leg to swing through in order to hear ‘that rip’. This teaches the athlete how to generate power through a curve that helps them travel powerfully down the ice.

In order for younger kids to feel their hips connect with the rest of their bodies, Kelly says they are a train and the train tracks are curving back and forth. The hips need to stay on the tracks. Also, keeping a longer edge forces the kids to maintain control.

Kids often just want to skate super fast and fly around the rink. Slowing the athlete down and isolating the movements forces them to think and pay attention to their bodies. Andthis is how they learn which muscles they need to engage for each movement.
