Kathleen is giving a private lesson to a student who is working on moving down the ice as quickly as possible while skating crossovers. For this drill Kathleen does not want him to rotate his shoulders. During a game, a player might need to skate east to west a bit to get ‘around bodies’ but this drill is focusing on traveling as quickly as possible from north to south down the rink.
Kathleen breaks down for us that the player is doing forward crossovers with sort of a stride in the middle.
Next she has him skate mohawks and crossovers in a circle in both directions. She varies the directions and notices that he doesn’t put much weight on his mohawk.
Kathleen points out that players shouldn’t have to think about skating during a game, the muscle memory should be there from previous training sessions, and they can simply think about the game. The best players are the best skaters.
