Joe continues his lesson with his elite level student. In this drill, the focus is keeping the head and shoulders turned into the circle while controlling the puck with a forehand. The skater needs to skate tight circles around three cones, then turn at the dot with an acceleration to take a shot.
Joe wants her to start off slower to focus on eyes, shoulders, and keeping hands away from her body. This drill utilizes deep edges and crossovers while maintaining control and using speed intentionally.
We can see that this student is a skilled athlete, and Joe jokes that he was to find “at least something” to critique.
During the second run-through, Joe asks for more speed and more nuanced puck control. He wants her to keep her eyes up and be able to read numbers should he hold them up. Even though she is controlling the puck, Joe wants eyes up and looking around.
This is a fantastic drill that focuses on skating, puck placement, and shooting all in one.
