Change Direction Toes for Time (Jackie Brenner)

Jackie introduces a drill she calls ‘Toes for Time.’ This is for situations when the athlete has time to set up a curvature and change directions. She wants stable stances and heads and eyes up with shoulders relaxed.

This is a circular drill with hips pivoting below their shoulders.

Next she adds a three hip turn before a back crossover. This emphasizes turning the hips quickly, trying to feel the ball of the foot and the heel without disturbing the upper body.

When an athlete falls, Jackie points out that his feet didn’t turn at the same time. She reminds the skaters to make sure their feet move all the way through on the turns.

She discusses the details of the three turns with the group and emphasizes the opportunity with the back crossover to gain momentum. The understroke should not be overlooked.

During one more skate through, Jackie reminds us that the feet should be right under the hips for those quick turns.
