Jackie is teaching a small group lesson with her teaching partner Averie. They start with a one foot power pull drill with knee drops. This helps develop core strength and edge awareness.
The outside edge is typically harder for skaters than the inside. The coaches have the students drive their knee forward to assist in finding the outside edge and propel themselves.
Jackie mentions that when she has collegiate or pro athletes perform this drill she can tell if they’ve had power skating training. “Unweighting” the blade and creating power without having to change feet is a fantastic skill to have.
They then reverse the drill. “Backward everything forward everything” is Jackie’s mantra when it comes to skating. An athlete needs to be well rounded to be an optimal player. When skating backward, the weight is more in the ball of the foot.
For one of the more advanced skaters in the group, Jackie adds a puck as an extra layer of difficulty.
